Seasons

There's a wave here for you, all year round

The bay works in two seasons — what changes is where the swell comes from and which spots turn on. We pick the right one for your level, every single day.

South swell season

May – October · S / SW groundswells

South swell season

More push — great for progressing and for advanced surfers

Southern-hemisphere storms wrap swell around Punta de Mita and its points and reefs wake up: La Lancha, Burros and — on the bigger days — the outer reefs. Typical waves run 3–5 ft, the water is at its warmest, and El Anclote and Sayulita stay friendly for first-timers.

North swell season

November – April · N / NW groundswells

North swell season

Cleaner and friendlier — the classic season to learn

Winter swells from the North Pacific arrive wrapped and organized: chest-high, glassy, long waves in Punta de Mita that seem designed for your first take-off and for longboarding. It's also Quimixto season — the boat-only wave we love — plus dry sunny days and whales on the crossings.

Water temperature: warm all year — board shorts and rash guard, never a wetsuit.

The local rule: surf early. Mornings wake up glassy with a light offshore breeze; the afternoon sea breeze chops it up. That's why our sessions favor the first hours of the day.

Where we surf

Our playground: the whole bay

From the gentlest first-wave point to a boat-only right in front of the jungle.

El Anclote · Punta de Mita

Level:
Beginner
Access:
Beach / walk-in
Best season:
All year — even gentler in winter

The classic first-wave spot of the bay: soft, long right-handers rolling in front of the village, made for longboards and first lessons.

La Lancha

Level:
All levels
Access:
Short jungle trail — or by boat
Best season:
Almost all year, peaks May–Sep

A reef point with rights and lefts and several peaks that spread the crowd. Its inner section is a beginner classroom; the outer peak has power for advanced boards.

Sayulita

Level:
Beginner – intermediate
Access:
Beach town
Best season:
Friendliest Nov–Apr; bigger in summer

Mexico's surf-town postcard: mellow rights and lefts in front of town, warm water, and restaurants and hammocks waiting when you get out.

Punta Burros

Level:
Intermediate
Access:
Drive + short jungle walk
Best season:
S swell (May–Aug); big winter norths too

A rock-bottom point serving mostly rights, one of the most consistent peaks around Punta de Mita. The step up when Anclote starts feeling small.

Quimixto

Boat only
Level:
Intermediate – advanced
Access:
BOAT ONLY — our specialty
Best season:
North swells (Oct–Apr)

The bay's boat-access jewel: a long left over rock and reef, in front of a village with no roads and a jungle waterfall. Empty line-ups — because you can only arrive by sea. We happen to have boats.

La Bahia

Boat only
Level:
Advanced
Access:
By boat (or a long rock scramble)
Best season:
SW swell (May–Oct), overhead days

Called by many the best wave in Punta de Mita: long, fast rights over reef that go overhead on solid south swells. The awkward access keeps it uncrowded — unless you arrive by boat.

El Faro

Boat only
Level:
Advanced
Access:
By boat
Best season:
Only on big swells (6 ft+)

The outer reef off the Punta de Mita lighthouse: it only breaks when the swell gets serious, and then it's steep, overhead and experts-only. Our boats put you right on the peak.

The Heaven on Earth difference

The surf school with its own fleet

We're the family behind Heaven on Earth Private Tours. That means your surf trip runs on our boats, with our team — waves like Quimixto that only break for people who arrive by sea, plus snorkeling, food on board and empty line-ups.

  • Private boat — never shared with strangers
  • Boards, guide and food arranged for you
  • Snorkel or swim between sessions
  • Whale sightings on winter crossings

Add the photo & drone session to your trip and take home your best wave, filmed from the sky.

Questions

Everything people ask before their first lesson

I've never surfed. Can I really do this?

Yes — that's exactly what the beginner class is for. We start on the sand with technique and safety, pick the friendliest wave of the day for your level, and your instructor is next to you in the water the whole time.

What's included in a lesson?

Everything you need: surfboard, leash, rash guard and your instructor. You just bring swimwear, sunscreen and energy. Gear is always included in the class price.

Where do the lessons happen?

Wherever the bay is working best for your level that day — usually the Punta de Mita area (El Anclote, La Lancha) or Sayulita. We confirm the exact meeting point over WhatsApp the day before.

When is the best season to surf here?

There are waves all year. November–April brings clean, gentle NW swell — the classic learning season. May–October brings stronger south swell for progressing and advanced surfing. Water is warm year-round: no wetsuit, ever.

What if the ocean doesn't cooperate?

We watch the forecast every day. If conditions aren't safe or fun for your level, we'll message you ahead of time and reschedule together — the ocean decides, and that's part of surfing.

Can kids take lessons?

Yes — family sessions are some of our favorites. Tell us the ages over WhatsApp and we'll set up the right board, the right beach and the right pace for them.

Can I rent a board without a lesson?

Of course — rentals start at $35 USD (~$600 MXN) per day, leash included. Message us what you ride and for how many days and we'll have it ready.

How do I book and pay?

Everything happens over WhatsApp with our team — you request your date here, we confirm availability, meeting point and payment options. No apps, no forms, no waiting.

Your first wave is waiting.

Message us your level, your dates and what you want from the ocean — we'll build your session around it.
